In perfumery vocabulary, IFRA Moss Residue is associated with dry moss, woody, earthy, leathery, muted green and phenolic. Its creative role is a deep base-note material with architectural presence, giving structure and character to complex accords.
In the organ, use it to build shape a controlled chypre shadow, enrich dry down fougere structures and introduce add forest-floor realism. As base note, it offers signature rather than mere theme.
Fractionation isolates a particular register of a larger material. Heads and terpene cuts tend toward lift; hearts focus the central identity; body and bottom cuts gather weight, shadow and less-volatile depth. A residue is the remaining, lower-volatility register after another separation—valuable for shadow, texture and unusual weight.
